Buying glasses online? What to know first

Buying glasses online can work well for some people, and your prescription is yours to use wherever you like. But it isn't right for every prescription, and the headline price isn't always the real price. Here's what to think about first.

When online can work

A simple, low single vision prescription in a frame you've worn before, where you already know the size fits, is the lowest-risk case for buying online.

Where it often goes wrong

Measurements. Lenses need to be centred on your pupils. A pupillary distance (PD) measured at home, or guessed, can leave your lenses off-centre, which can cause strain and headaches, especially with stronger prescriptions.
Varifocals and bifocals. These also need fitting heights, measured with you wearing the actual frame. Get them wrong and the reading and distance zones end up in the wrong place. This is the most common reason people struggle with varifocals.
Strong prescriptions. Lens thickness, index and frame choice matter much more, and it's hard to judge online.
Fit. Glasses that slip, pinch or sit crooked change where you're looking through the lens. In practice we adjust them on your face.
Aftercare. If something doesn't feel right, you need someone to check the lenses, the measurements and the fit.
